Unlike many ferroelectric materials, it maintains its unique properties even when very thin. “The key,” says Olsson, “is our ferroelectric material, AlScN. With AlScN at 20 nanometers, and MoS2 at 0.7 nanometers, the FE-FET dependably stores data for quick access. The Jariwala lab and collaborators achieved a design that keeps the memory window large with impressively small device dimensions. Until this study, miniaturizing FE-FETs has resulted in severe shrinking of the “memory window.” This means that as engineers reduce the size of the transistor design, the device develops an unreliable memory, mistaking 1s for 0s and vice versa, compromising its overall performance. Other research teams’ FE-FETs have been consistently stymied by a loss of ferroelectric properties as devices miniaturize to approach industry-appropriate scales. This MoS2 and AlScN combination is a true breakthrough in transistor technology. The lower the resistance, the faster the access speed for memory. The more current a device can carry, the faster it can operate for computing applications. “To our surprise, not only did both of them survive, but the amount of current this enables the semiconductor to carry was also record-breaking.” “With our semiconductor, MoS2, at a mere 0.7 nanometers, we weren’t sure it could survive the amount of charge that our ferroelectric material, AlScN, would inject into it,” says Kim. In addition, the tiny devices can be manufactured in large arrays scalable to industrial platforms. The Penn Engineering team’s device is notable for its unprecedented thinness, allowing for each individual device to operate with a minimum amount of surface area. “You can use them for computing as well as memory - interchangeably and with high efficiency.” “Because we have made these devices combining a ferroelectric insulator material with a 2D semiconductor, both are very energy efficient,” says Jariwala. The transistor layers a two-dimensional semiconductor called molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) on top of a ferroelectric material called aluminum scandium nitride (AlScN), demonstrating for the first time that these two materials can be effectively combined to create transistors at scales attractive to industrial manufacturing. Bent Professor of Engineering in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering (MSE) and Director of the Laboratory for Research on the Structure of Matter (LRSM). They collaborated with fellow Penn Engineering faculty members Troy Olsson, also Associate Professor in ESE, and Eric Stach, Robert D. candidate in his lab, debuted the design. A successful FE-FET design would dramatically undercut the size and energy usage thresholds of traditional devices, as well as increase speed.Ī recent study published in Nature Nanotechnology led by Deep Jariwala, Associate Professor in the Department of Electrical and Systems Engineering (ESE), and Kwan-Ho Kim, a Ph.D. Able to both store and process data, FE-FETs are the subject of a wide range of research and development projects. This property allows them to serve as non-volatile memory devices as well as computing devices. Like traditional silicon-based transistors, FE-FETs are switches, turning on and off at incredible speed to communicate the 1s and 0s computers use to perform their operations.īut FE-FETs have an additional function that conventional transistors do not: their ferroelectric properties allow them to hold on to electrical charge. With ever more enormous data sets to store, search and analyze at increasing levels of complexity, these devices must become smaller, faster and more energy efficient to keep up with the pace of data innovation.įerroelectric field effect transistors (FE-FETs) are among the most intriguing answers to this challenge. The Big Data revolution has strained the capabilities of state-of-the-art electronic hardware, challenging engineers to rethink almost every aspect of the microchip. Researchers at the University of Pennsylvania School of Engineering and Applied Science have introduced a new FE-FET design that demonstrates record-breaking performances in both computing and memory. Take for example a patient in the intensive care unit, connected to a point-of-care bedside monitor. Provide a design blueprint for a single healthcare organization (hospital, day care facility, rehabilitation facility, etc.) and its partner network and establish an architecture development method for healthcare.ĭelivery domains allow us to determine architecture archetypes (the how) required for health, as shown below: We can further use the two-dimensional map to clarify the scope of our reference architecture: To help architects and planners define where they want to be (how the architecture of a concrete organization and partner network should look like), and how to get there (a way of working) – at the level of an individual organization and across the partner network:įigure 4: Scope Blueprint and Development Method Support the partner network for the delivery of healthcare, use of technology, commercial viability, regulatory compliance, and adherence to quality. Organizations in the healthcare space, such as Integrating the Healthcare Enterprise (IHE), successfully apply this concept in their integration profiles. When caregivers team up to deliver care, they form a partner network along the patient journey. Support the modeling of health services and their associated processes across space (delivery domains) and time (service domains). The space-time map allows us to associate health services and their connected processes to delivery organizations along the patient journey, as shown in the following diagram:įigure 3: The Patient Journey Architect for Health Services The CDS integrates with the Hospital Information System, which the hospital in turn uses to communicate with external parties. Its horizontal axis displays the service domains across the continuum of care ( what and when) its vertical axis outlines the corresponding delivery domains ( where and how).Ī hospital uses various point-of-care technologies, such as monitoring devices, or infusion pumps, which connect to a Clinical Decision Support (CDS) system that manages the clinical workflow. The two-dimensional map shown in the previous diagram, tells us who provides what and when, where and how. We start with the delivery of reliable high-quality health services to promote healthy living, prevent disease, diagnose and treat, and help rehabilitate or provide supportive care where needed: An outer ring contains organizations, such as care providers (hospitals, day care facilities, etc.), manufacturers of medical devices, or producers of pharmaceutical products.įigure 1: Healthcare Landscape Architecture Building Blocks Health Services At the center of this landscape is the person seeking health, surrounded by health system building blocks (health worker, information, governance, etc.). In this document, I will use the Healthcare landscape that I introduced in the first article. Outside in: Start outside the organization, from the perspective of a customer, and design your organization around the needs of the customer. From the large to the small: Start with the outer context, the overall Healthcare system, and refine into individual subject areas and building blocks. This document uses the following approach: Together with the essential capabilities that we will introduce in a third article, they provide the input to how to build and deliver such a Reference Architecture. Based upon the principles developed in the first article, these ideas and concepts describe what is needed. In this second article, I discuss key ideas and concepts underlying the design of a Reference Architecture for Health. By Oliver Matthias Kipf, Software Lead EU MDR Program, Philips Which is very disappointed! We need to use the bases this week and so we have to sand them by ourselves and we need to spend time and money for them! When this issue wasnt our fault! It was their fault! Is completely fair to me receive new bases properly sanded + store credit due to the inconvenience because it was their fault. I contacted the business via email, they asked me for pictures and I sent all pictures and they told me they would shipped 3 new bases properly sanded and I was okay but what I meant is I paid for a product that I did not receive properly sanded so is a bit dangerous as well and that isnt cheap! So I was hoping a better resolution from the business so they then offered me $60 store credit on my next purchase but what I understood is that they would still shipped the bases + $60 store credit which is fair to me due to the inconvenience! Now Im trying to reach them back and no response from the business. My husband told me that he could buy tools and everything to sand them by himself! That means EXTRA MONEY AND EXTRA WORK! Because they are very sharp but also we decided to contact the business due to the issue because is the responsibility of them to sand all of their products and make sure they are 100% safe for their customers. Date of transaction: February 20th, 2023 Issue: bad product received Purchase amount: $493.19 Bad Product received: (3) 18x18 slip fit bases I received these bases non sanded which is very dangerous at time of handle them! You can cut yourself with those bases because they are not sanded so they are very sharp on all the edges and on the hangers. It’s always recommended to check whether your vehicle needs high-octane fuel to perform well before adding an octane booster. In that situation, that engine could benefit from octane booster. For example, engines that require high octane levels but have been routinely subjected to low octane fuel will have decreased performance. Automakers design and manufacture vehicles to respond to fuel within a certain octane range, so that means owners of ordinary sedans and other more conventional (non-performance) vehicles may be disappointed by how octane boosters perform when used.īut in certain situations, octane boosters have proven to actually work. Not surprisingly, high-performance vehicles tend to benefit most from octane boosters. Knocking is detrimental to an engine, which is why it’s important to prevent it from occurring. Normally increased octane levels mean extra compression is necessary to induce detonation. When you hear about an octane booster being anti-knocking, that means additional ignitions are not experienced within your cylinder when the booster is being used. Most octane boosters are also designed to prevent or eliminate pinging and knock. Octane boosters from companies such as Lucas Oil and Torco are good options to avoid potentially damaging sensors. It’s worth noting that unleaded octane boosters can be “healthier” for your car, since leaded fuel has a tendency to affect or even harm oxygen sensors. Products will vary on the blend of these ingredients, but these are normally the base for most octane boosters. They are typically a blend of tetraethyl lead, alcohols (including ethanol), traces of methylpropyl, manganese, toluene, and ethers. When you’re shopping for octane boosters, you’ll notice the ingredients used in most of the products are fairly straightforward. This results in a higher compression ratio and better vehicle performance. Generally, as octane ratings increase, pre-ignition becomes more difficult. Octane boosters are a fuel enhancement product by increasing the octane rating of the fuel, enhancing a vehicle’s performance. Octane boosters are part of the “fuel additive” category, which typically includes fuel enhancement and fuel stabilization products. Safe for oxygen sensors and catalytic converters, this octane booster is safe for use in leaded and unleaded gasoline, along with alternative fuels such as gasohol, reformulated gasoline, and all ethanol blends. It’s formulated to work on engines equipped with carburetors, port fuel injection, direct injection, turbocharged, supercharged, and even nitrous-injected engines. It also serves the purpose of reducing power loss caused by knock-retard in computer-controlled vehicles.Īvailable in a 16-ounce can, Max Boost is formulated with MMT, which delivers the best octane enhancement to help eliminate engine detonation, pre-ignition, and pinging or knocking caused by low-octane gasoline. Max Boost replaces lead additives for the protection of non-hardened valve seats, allowing it to restore power and fuel economy while cleaning deposits from fuel injectors. This racing formula raises octane rating up to 30 points or three numbers, so it’s worth mentioning that it’s not street legal. Our top-performing octane booster is the Royal Purple Max Boost, designed to increase horsepower and stabilize fuel while reducing knocking and pinging. Most people, however, do prefer the handwriting experience in Notability (even avid GoodNotes users), to that in the other two apps. What works for me might not work for you and that’s perfectly fine. This is debatable since we all have different preferences when it comes to this sort of thing. Notability also has the best handwriting feel you will get on the iPad. It has fewer bugs and handles big notebooks and many documents very well. Notability is also the most stable app of the three. Notability takes up the least space on your iPad and this makes it perfect for those on small budgets that can’t afford iPads with bigger storage. We keep hoping Noteshelf’s developers figure out how to make the app more stable. Of the three apps, Noteshelf is the most unstable though. It is just like their emoji feature, you can’t help but just love it. These tiny perks add a little special something to your OCR experience in the app and we love it. The app also has the ability to keep your handwriting’s size with its Fit to Selection option. It supports 65 languages for OCR! That is the most languages in any one app, out of the three. Noteshelf keeps the colour of your ink when you convert your handwriting to text. If handwriting conversion is a big part of your work, Noteshelf is the app you want. It’s a good option if you dislike your handwriting, not so much if you don’t. That, and also the fact that the app tends to alter your handwriting. That is why we are sceptical to acknowledge their handwriting experience as the best. Should this bug plague your app, the user experience in Noteshelf will quickly turn sour. However, since the first version of the app, Noteshelf suffers from a bug that causes the app’s handwriting to lag. The handwriting experience in Noteshelf can easily compete with that in Notability if it’s not better. If you use Evernote already, then you might benefit more from using Noteshelf. Noteshelf is also the only app of the three that allows you to publish your notes to Evernote. They have plenty of paper templates to choose from for all aspects of your life. Why Noteshelf?Īre you big on paper templates or do you want an app with fully functional planner templates? Noteshelf’s got you covered. Noteshelf will improve bad handwriting and has a massive collection of free planner templates for finance, parenting, event planners, health & fitness, etc. Notability is an awesome note-taking app. GoodNotes doubles as a great handwriting note-taking app and PDF-reader. Is Noteshelf underrated? There is a lot of buzz around GoodNotes and Notability but Noteshelf also packs plenty of options. Cold weather makes it harder for them to find food, even if they can survive the cold. Lots of different kinds of birds fly south to warmer areas when it starts to get cold. Their speed helps them find and catch food (or escape from predators) and their fur usually changes to white so that they blend in with the snow and are protected from other larger animals. Other animals, like foxes and rabbits, do not hibernate at all – they stay active throughout winter. Even though they don’t sleep all winter long, they still save lots of energy because their bodies slow down and make food last much longer than normal. Animals that go into this type of hibernation (sometimes called torpor ) include bears, chipmunks, and raccoons. It doesn’t take them as long to wake up as true hibernators, but they will be sluggish for awhile. They will wake up a few times during the winter to move around a little bit or to eat food they have stored in their den. Their heart and breathing slows down, but most of the time their body temperature does not drop as much. Some animals sleep for long lengths of time in the winter, but they do not go into true hibernation. Some animals that hibernate are reptiles and amphibians like frogs and snakes, insects like ladybugs and bees, some fish, and some mammals like bats, hedghogs, and prairie dogs. They make sure their den, cave, or burrow is only big enough for them and their babies and that it is someplace that is hard for other animals to find. Besides being protected from the cold while they hibernate, the sleeping animals are also usually well protected from any other animals who might bother them. Hibernating is great for animals because they do not have to try to find food and they don’t have to even go outside in the cold at all! Because its body slows down and stops working the way it normally does and because the animal is not moving around and using up energy, its body is able to survive off of the fat that it stored up by eating a lot in the fall. It takes a long time for a hibernating animal to wake up. The animal’s body temperature goes way down also – to just a few degrees above freezing! The animal’s brain also goes into a form of sleep. When an animal hibernates, its heart beats very slowly and it also breathes less. Many animals snuggle up in caves, burrows (holes in the ground), or hollow tree trunks and sleep during the cold winter months when food is harder to find and cold weather makes it harder for their bodies to work.
